In another case, the Kerala excise squad took Khalid Rahman, an official of 'Alappuzha Gymkhana' into custody on charge of drug consumption. The arrest was effected in the wee hours of Sunday at a flat in Marine Drive area of Kochi. During the search at Rahman's residence, the police took into custody director of the Kunchako Boban starrer 'Bheemante Vazhi' Ashraf Hamza and his common friend. On the basis of a tip off, the excise department officials raided on an upmarket flat in Kochi city and seized hybrid cannabis from the possession of the three persons. The group had assembled in the flat, which the police said was rented by a “prominent cinematographer,” to discuss a film project. They were arrested while preparing to smoke the cannabis.
An official of the excise department said the three were arrested and booked under the sections 20(b) (II) A and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. A third man arrested was named as Shalif Muhammad, who was friends with both directors. The group had 1.5 grams of the drug seized by authorities. All three allegedly told officers they were heavy drug users. Excise inspector K.P. Pramod informed Manorama News that at the time the three were about to consume the cannabis. Interrogations also revealed long-term use of drugs by the group, he added, while the ownership of the flat was being probed. All three were subsequently freed on bail.
