Disastrous performance of Kangana Ranauts Thalaivi :
After suffering losses on the advance given, Zee Studios asked the producers, Vibri Motion Pictures, for a refund of Rs. 6 crores after releasing Thalaivii's Hindi and Tamil versions both domestically and abroad. Zee made an upfront payment of a specified sum for the film's distribution rights. According to Zee, 6 crores of the paid sum were not recovered. In order to request payment, it wrote letters to Vibri Motion Pictures. But, the producers chose not to respond. Zee made the decision to request the help of IMPPA as a result. Zee Studios intends to file a lawsuit to recover their funds.
The life of the actress-turned-politician J Jayalalitha served as inspiration for the film Thalaivi, which also starred Arvind Swamy, Bhagyashree, and Raj Arjun. It was helmed by A L Vijay and released on September 10, 2021, when all theatres in the nation were open owing to pandemic limitations. In addition, the filmmakers chose to broadcast the movie on Netflix two weeks after it opened in theatres. This caused the multiplexes to stop showing the movie. Its collections suffered as a result. It had a low starting price of 32 lakh rupees and a low lifetime earnings of 2 crore rupees. While the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film made about Rs. 5.75 crores, the overseas revenues were likewise disappointing.
