Karan Johar’s star-studded period drama “Takht” which was announced in early 2020 created quite a stir. The film had an ensemble star cast of Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Anil Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar and Janhvi Kapoor. The story was intended to depict the historical relation of Mughal Empire's two princes Aurangzeb and Dara Shikoh, which was part of a larger royal battle for succession. On 1 February 2020, a teaser video was released, while the film is set to be released on Christmas 2021. But as time passed “Takht” did not go into production and audiences started to wonder what was keeping the movie. Very recently, Karan Johar opened up about the development and is said to have hinted that that the film is very much in the pipeline.

Speaking to Galatta Plus, Johar opened up on the status of the delayed film. Asked about “Takht”, he revealed its making became impossible due to multiple reasons. He did not provide them with actual information, but he calmed them by claiming that the current state of the project is not forever, “It’s on my shelf, and we’ll get there one day… I’ll make that film one day.” This is the best screenplay that I have ever read,” the “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” director said of the script of “Takht,” written by Sumit Roy. Despite the disappointment, Johar is still very emotionally connected to the subject, and declares that he would revisit the project when ready.

Johar's most recent directorial project, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” (2023), was a romantic comedy headlined by Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. He reportedly wants to direct an action movie in the future. His future projects as a producer include "Dhadak 2," "Naagzilla" and "Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri" suggesting he will continue to have a creative role in the industry.
