Post the blockbuster success of Venkatesh and Anil Ravipudi’s “Sankranthiki Vasthunnam” over the Sankranthi season back in January, collections have literally dried up at the Telugu box-office. Though some flicks like “Thandel” have scored some measure of success, no film has managed to outstrip the audience and mass frenzy of “Sankranthiki Vasthunnam.” An interesting trend is starting to emerge in the movie business as far as today's film production not reaching a decent sized audience. Take, for instance, how Nani’s upcoming ‘HIT 3’ is likely to invite action-buffs among the younger audience but not cater to the interests of everyone.

There is an absence at the movies of storytellers who can bring general interest audiences to the theater. It used to be Srinu Vaitla before and that seat is occupied by Anil Ravipudi now. Now Anil might not have the staying power with his comedies like Sri did, but he well fills the void in terms of audience connections. In such a way that he has become a new master in the art of making family entertainers that one can't even find in certain category of directors and films.

He has emerged as the family audience’s reliable guy, doing what it takes to get themselves to the box office by themselves. Especially with Tollywood in a current downward spiral, the industry could do with another comedy-oriented director like Anil. Having sensed it well, Anil has started aiming for the Sankranti season for his films. But then expecting him to deliver 2-3 such films every year would be the height of foolishness, so letâs wait and watch when he/she will get one more such director to Tollywood is a big question to ponder upon.
